Why Adobe Commerce, why now

Why Canadian Distributors Choose Adobe Commerce, and Who Builds It

5 tax authorities a national Canadian store can file with2 countries Clean Harbors orders from on one Magento PWA

A Canadian distributor selling to businesses needs company accounts, shared catalogs, customer-specific pricing, quotes and an ERP that stays in step with the store. Adobe Commerce was built for that. A team that has built it for a Canadian distributor, with the tax, the languages and the ERP in place, is harder to find than the platform.

Canada adds a layer no US template allows for. Place of supply follows the delivery address, so one national store charges HST in five provinces, GST alone in the rest, and GST with a separately administered sales tax in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec: up to five tax authorities on one checkout.

Adobe Commerce handles that by scope. Base currency and catalog price scope can be set per website, tax rates are keyed to the province and postal code, and language lives at store-view level: one website per tax and currency regime, with fr_CA and en_CA store views on it.

We have built it. Clean Harbors orders workwear for its teams across the US and Canada on a Magento PWA we built, with department selection at checkout and manager approval before anything ships.

What is different in Canada

Six Things a Canadian Store Has to Get Right

Each one is a fact of selling in Canada, checked at its source, and a line in the build plan rather than a surprise after launch.

Isometric icon of a blue crate holding smaller cubes, one dropping into it

GST, HST, PST, RST and QST by Delivery Address

HST at 13 to 15 percent in five provinces, Nova Scotia at 14 since April 2025, GST at 5 percent elsewhere, plus QST at 9.975, BC PST at 7, Saskatchewan PST at 6 and Manitoba RST at 7. The rate follows the delivery address.

Non-Resident Registration at CAD 30,000

Since July 2021 a seller outside Canada shipping goods to Canadian buyers registers for GST/HST once those sales pass CAD 30,000 in twelve months. British Columbia asks out-of-province sellers to register for PST above CAD 10,000 of BC sales.

French Parity Under Bill 96, B2B Included

Section 52 of the Charter requires catalogs and websites in French, as accessible as the English. Since Bill 96 took effect in June 2022, business customers must be served in French too, and the OQLF has fined a company over its website.

Law 25: Privacy Officer Named, Trackers Off by Default

A privacy officer named on the site since September 2022, settings at their most private by default and an assessment before data leaves Quebec since September 2023, with penalties up to CAD 10 million or 2 percent of worldwide turnover.

Isometric icon of a parcel and a blue shopping bag on a plate

Canada Post REST and OAuth Since April 2026

On 30 April 2026 Canada Post made REST and JSON the only protocol and OAuth 2.0 bearer tokens mandatory on every call. SOAP and XML are gone, so a module written for the old keys returns no rates until it is rebuilt.

Moneris, Interac Debit and CAD Rounding

Interac Online closed in October 2024; Interac Debit now reaches online checkouts through digital wallets, on Stripe since February 2026. Moneris and Worldline run through Marketplace modules, and cash rounding to five cents has to be configured.

How We Build Adobe Commerce for Canada

01

Architect

We map your provinces, currencies and customer types onto Adobe Commerce scope: a website for each tax and currency regime, a store view for each language, and the B2B features distributors use, from company accounts with approvers to shared catalogs and customer-specific price lists.

Customer-Specific Pricing

02

Integrate

Stock, prices and orders sync with your ERP in both directions. Canada Post is connected on its REST and OAuth API and Purolator on its web services, Moneris or Worldline takes payment in CAD, and punchout and purchase orders are wired for customers who buy through procurement.

03

Localise

The fr_CA store view gets a content workflow so French never lags English, legal pages and transactional emails ship in both languages, the consent banner is built for Law 25 with trackers off until the visitor says otherwise, and the newsletter box at checkout is unticked, as CASL requires.

04

Launch and Keep

Before go-live a test order goes to an address in every province and territory, in both languages, and the tax, shipping and payment on each is checked against the rules. After it, the store stays on a supported version with patch cover, and support runs in hours that overlap your day.

Plainly

How We Work With Canadian Merchants, Plainly

13 provinces and territories, four tax regimes, one checkoutfr_CA and en_CA store views on one website and one admin

We have no office in Canada, and we would rather say so here than have you find out on the first call. Our working day overlaps the Eastern business day, so a question sent in the morning is answered the same day, and release windows are agreed in your time zone.

Contracts and support are in English. The French on your store comes from your own team or a translation partner you trust; what we build is the structure that keeps it at parity: the fr_CA store view, the bilingual legal pages and emails, and a workflow that flags an English change with no French counterpart.

The proof is public. The Clean Harbors case study on this site describes a Magento PWA store network serving employees across the US and Canada, with department selection at checkout and manager approval before an order ships.

The first conversation covers four things: your catalog and how it is priced per customer, the provinces you deliver to, the system that holds stock and orders, and the languages your customers expect. From those we draw the website and store-view map and the integration list, and that is what gets estimated.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions?

Tell us about your store and we will come back with straight answers.

Talk to us

Do you have an office in Canada?

No, and we say so rather than imply otherwise. Our working day overlaps the Eastern business day, so a morning question is answered the same day and release windows are agreed in your time zone. Contracts and support are in English. What we bring is a team that has built Adobe Commerce B2B stores with provincial tax, bilingual store views and ERP sync, including the store network serving Clean Harbors across the US and Canada.

How does Adobe Commerce handle five tax authorities on one store?

Tax rates in Adobe Commerce are keyed to the country, the province and the postal code, and a calculation setting decides whether the delivery or the billing address is used. We configure a rate for each province and territory, GST or HST plus QST, BC PST, Saskatchewan PST and Manitoba RST where they apply, and the checkout picks the rate from the delivery address. This is not tax advice.

Do we need a French store if we sell into Quebec?

Section 52 of the Charter of the French language requires catalogs and similar publications, which the OQLF reads to include websites, to be in French, with the French version on terms at least as favourable as any other language. Since Bill 96 received assent on 1 June 2022, business customers must be served in French as well as consumers. That means a fr_CA store view at parity. This is not legal advice.

What does Law 25 require of the store?

Three things touch a store directly: a person in charge of personal information, with their title and contact details published on the site, since September 2022; privacy settings at their most private by default, so tracking tags stay off until the visitor turns them on; and a privacy impact assessment before personal information leaves Quebec, which includes a hosted analytics tool. Administrative penalties have run up to CAD 10 million or 2 percent of worldwide turnover since September 2023. This is not legal advice.

Which Canadian payment gateways do you integrate?

Moneris and Worldline through their Adobe Commerce Marketplace modules, Stripe where a merchant wants Interac Debit through digital wallets, which Interac and Stripe announced in February 2026, and the card gateways you already hold. Interac Online closed in October 2024, so a store still offering it has a dead option at checkout. Cash rounding and CAD settlement are configured per website.

Our Canada Post module stopped returning rates. Why?

On 30 April 2026 Canada Post released new versions of its rating, shipping, tracking and returns APIs with REST and JSON as the only protocol and an OAuth 2.0 bearer token required on every call. SOAP and XML are no longer supported, so a module built on the old API keys fails silently. We rebuild the integration on the current API and test every service level before go-live.

Can you connect our ERP?

Yes. Stock, prices, customers and orders move between Adobe Commerce and your ERP in both directions, on the ERP's own API or its import and export formats where there is none. We have connected ERPs and accounting systems for distributors with customer-specific pricing and purchase orders, and the integration is tested with your real price lists before launch.

Can we sell into the US from the same store?

Yes, as a second website on the same installation with its own base currency, tax configuration and carriers, sharing the catalog and the admin. For shipments the other way, into Canada by courier from the US, the CBSA's memorandum D8-2-16 sets the CUSMA thresholds: free of duties and taxes up to CAD 40 and free of duties up to CAD 150. This is not tax advice.

We are a US company. Do we have to register for GST/HST to sell into Canada?

Under the rules in force since 1 July 2021, a non-resident seller shipping goods to Canadian buyers who are not registered for GST/HST has to register once those sales pass CAD 30,000 in twelve months, and British Columbia separately asks out-of-province sellers to register for PST once BC sales pass CAD 10,000. When you register is a question for your tax advisor. This is not tax advice.

Should we use Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source for a Canadian B2B store?

Adobe Commerce carries the B2B features distributors use out of the box: company accounts with approvers, shared catalogs, negotiated quotes and purchase orders. Magento Open Source can be extended to cover some of them, which costs development and maintenance instead of a licence. We put both on a page with your catalog and order volume, let the numbers decide, and say Open Source when it fits.

How is a Canadian Adobe Commerce project priced?

Individually, after a review of your catalog, your provinces, your ERP and your languages, because those four decide the size of the build. There is no price list on this site. After the first conversation you receive the website and store-view map, the integration list and an estimate against it, so the number is attached to a scope you can read.

Can you take over an Adobe Commerce store another agency built?

Yes. We start with a read of the repository and the store configuration, in particular the website and store-view structure and the tax rules, because a Canadian store built on a single-website assumption is usually where the problems come from. You get a written report of what is sound, what is wrong and what it would take.

Let’s build something great together!
