Why Canada Needs Its Own Ecommerce Build

5 tax authorities on one checkout

A store that sells across Canada meets rules a US template never does. Place of supply follows the delivery address, so one checkout charges HST in five provinces, GST alone in the rest, and GST plus a separate provincial tax in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec: five tax authorities on one order, each with its own filing.

Quebec adds French at parity under the Charter and Bill 96, and Law 25 duties on consent and privacy. PIPEDA governs customer data federally and CASL the marketing email. Canada Post made its APIs REST-only in April 2026, and Interac Debit reaches online checkouts through digital wallets, on Stripe since February 2026.

Each is a configuration, an integration or a content workflow, and routine when planned from the first day. We have built a store network that orders across the US and Canada and a storefront in three languages, and we have no office in Canada, which we say here rather than on the first call.

Does this sound familiar?

Six Places a Store Built for the US Breaks in Canada

Each one is routine when it is planned, and expensive when it is discovered by a customer, a carrier or a regulator.

Tax by the Delivery Address

HST at 15 percent in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, 14 in Nova Scotia and 13 in Ontario. GST at 5 percent elsewhere, with QST at 9.975, BC PST at 7, Saskatchewan PST at 6 and Manitoba RST at 7 on top. The parcel's destination picks the rate.

French at Parity in Quebec

Section 52 of the Charter puts catalogs and websites in French, with any other version available only on terms at least as favourable. Since Bill 96 took effect in June 2022, business customers are served in French as well as consumers.

Consent and a Privacy Officer Under Law 25

A person in charge of personal information, with their title and contact details on the site. Technology that identifies, locates or profiles a visitor disclosed, and left off until the visitor turns it on. Penalties up to CAD 10 million or 2 percent of worldwide turnover.

Marketing Email Under CASL

Federal law prohibits a commercial email without the recipient's consent, with the sender identified and an unsubscribe mechanism in every message. So the newsletter box at checkout starts unticked, and the consent is recorded with the order.

Carrier Modules That Stopped Returning Rates

On 30 April 2026 Canada Post made REST the only protocol and an OAuth 2.0 token mandatory on every call to its rating, shipping, tracking and returns APIs. A module written for the old keys returns no rates until it is rebuilt.

Payment Methods Canadians Expect

Interac Debit reaches online checkouts through digital wallets, on Stripe since February 2026. Moneris and Worldline run through platform modules, Shopify Payments pays out in CAD on every plan, and cash rounding to five cents has to be configured.

How a Canadian build runs

How We Build Ecommerce for Canada

01

Configure

We map your provinces, currencies and languages onto the platform's scope: tax classes and rates for every province and territory, CAD as the base currency with cash rounding, a store view or market per language, and a consent banner built for Law 25 from the first day.

02

Integrate

Canada Post goes on its REST and OAuth API and Purolator on its web services, with rate shopping between them. Moneris, Worldline or Stripe takes payment in CAD. Your accounting system or ERP keeps stock, prices and orders in step, and marketplaces feed the same catalog.

03

Localise

The French store view gets a content workflow so it never lags the English, legal pages and transactional emails ship in both languages, search and filters understand both, and the newsletter opt-in is built the way CASL expects. The French itself comes from your translators or one you approve.

Launch and Support

Before go-live a test order goes to an address in every province and territory, in both languages, and the tax, shipping and payment on each is checked against the rules. After it, the store is monitored and supported in hours that overlap your day, and kept on a supported version.

How We Work With Merchants in Canada, Plainly

2 countries served by one store network we built

We have no office in Canada, and we would rather say so here than have you find out on the first call. Our working day overlaps the Eastern business day, so a morning question is answered the same day and release windows are agreed in your time zone. Contracts and support are in English.

The French on your store comes from your team or a translator you approve. We build the structure that keeps it at parity: the fr_CA store view, the bilingual legal pages and emails, and a workflow that flags an English change with no French counterpart.

The proof is public: Clean Harbors orders workwear across the US and Canada on a Magento PWA we built, and Farmasi sells from a storefront we rebuilt in English, Spanish and French.

The first conversation covers your provinces, your languages, your carriers and the system behind your stock. From those we draw the store map and the integration list, and that is what gets estimated.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions?

Tell us about your store and we will come back with straight answers.

Talk to us

Do you have an office in Canada?

No, and we say so rather than imply otherwise. Our working day overlaps the Eastern business day, so a morning question is answered the same day and release windows are agreed in your time zone. Contracts and support are in English. What we bring is a team that has built stores with provincial tax, bilingual store views and Canadian carriers, including the Magento PWA network that serves Clean Harbors across the US and Canada.

How do you handle provincial tax on one Canadian store?

Tax rates are keyed to the country, the province and the postal code, and the checkout applies the rate from the delivery address, which is where the CRA places the supply for goods delivered to a customer. We configure HST for Ontario and the four Atlantic provinces, GST for the rest, and QST, BC PST, Saskatchewan PST and Manitoba RST where they apply, then send a test order to every province and territory before launch. This is not tax advice.

Does our store have to be in French?

If you sell into Quebec, section 52 of the Charter of the French language requires catalogs and similar publications, which the Office québécois de la langue française reads to include websites, to be in French, with any other version available only on terms at least as favourable. Since Bill 96 received assent on 1 June 2022, business customers must be served in French as well as consumers. How far that reaches a merchant with no establishment in Quebec is a question for your counsel. This is not legal advice.

What does Law 25 require of an online store?

A person in charge of personal information, with their title and contact details published on the site; a privacy policy in clear terms; technology that identifies, locates or profiles a visitor disclosed in advance and left off until the visitor activates it; a privacy impact assessment before personal information leaves Quebec, which includes a hosted analytics tool; and, since 22 September 2024, a copy of a customer's data in a structured format on request. Administrative penalties run up to CAD 10 million or 2 percent of worldwide turnover. This is not legal advice.

Which carriers do you integrate?

Canada Post on the REST API it has required since 30 April 2026, with an OAuth 2.0 token on every call, Purolator on its web services, and the couriers you already hold accounts with, with rate shopping between them at checkout. If a Canada Post module stopped returning rates this year, that API change is almost certainly why, and we rebuild the integration on the current version.

Which payment gateways work best in Canada?

On Shopify, Shopify Payments pays out in CAD on every plan and in USD as well on the Advanced and Plus plans. On Magento and Adobe Commerce, Moneris and Worldline run through platform modules, and Stripe adds Interac Debit through digital wallets, which Interac and Stripe announced in February 2026. Whatever the gateway, settlement is in CAD and cash rounding to five cents is configured, because a Canadian customer notices when it is not.

We are a US company. Do we have to register for GST/HST?

A non-resident carrying on business in Canada registers once taxable sales pass CAD 30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters, and the digital-economy rules in force since 1 July 2021 apply the same CAD 30,000 over twelve months to goods shipped to Canadian consumers. British Columbia separately asks a seller outside the province to register for PST once BC sales pass CAD 10,000 in twelve months, before the goods are delivered. When you register is a question for your tax advisor. This is not tax advice.

What does CASL mean for our newsletter and order emails?

Canada's anti-spam law prohibits sending a commercial electronic message without the recipient's consent, and every message has to identify the sender and carry an unsubscribe mechanism. We build the newsletter opt-in as an unticked box with the consent recorded against the customer, keep transactional emails to what the order needs, and wire the unsubscribe so it works in both languages.

Which platform should a Canadian store be on?

Shopify for a single brand selling to consumers, with Shopify Payments, Canadian taxes and bilingual content handled well out of the box. Magento or Adobe Commerce for a distributor or a multi-brand merchant that needs company accounts, customer-specific pricing, a website per tax and currency regime and a deep ERP integration. BigCommerce and WooCommerce where the catalog and the budget point there. We put your catalog, your customers and your systems on one page and let them decide.

Can you migrate a Canadian store between platforms?

Yes. The migration carries the catalog, customers and order history, maps every old URL to a new one with redirects, and rebuilds the tax rules, the carrier integrations and both language versions on the new platform. A test order to every province in both languages is part of the pre-launch check, and rankings are watched for weeks after the switch.

How is a Canadian ecommerce build priced?

Individually, after the first conversation, because the provinces you deliver to, the languages, the carriers and gateways you hold and the system behind the stock decide the size of the build. There is no price list on this site. You receive the store map, the integration list and an estimate against each item, so the number is attached to a scope you can read.

How long does a Canadian store take to build?

A Shopify store with provincial tax, bilingual content and Canadian carriers configured is a matter of weeks. A Magento or Adobe Commerce build with a website per regime, store views per language and an ERP integration is a matter of months. The plan you receive after the first conversation carries dates for your store rather than an average.

Can you take over a Canadian store another agency built?

Yes. We start with a read of the configuration, in particular the tax rules, the store-view or market structure, the carrier modules and the consent setup, because a Canadian store built on a US template is usually where the problems come from. You get a written report of what is sound, what is wrong and what it would take to fix.

Can the same store sell into the United States?

Yes. On Magento and Adobe Commerce it is a second website with its own base currency, tax configuration and carriers on the same installation; on Shopify it is a second market. Shipments into Canada by courier have their own duty and tax thresholds and need delivered duty paid labels, which the cross-border page on this site covers in full.

Let’s build something great together!
